Dear Editor,

In response to the letters published in Grey Bruce This Week from my colleague and Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and Minister Mitzie Hunter on the issue of the contentious Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP), I would like to add that I am hearing unequivocal concerns from my constituents in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound about the timing and affordability of this mandatory pension plan.

As the new federal government (and we the voters) begin to grapple with electoral reform, it's important that the facts of the options considered be accurate and that the options themselves are truthfully represented. This was not the case in Dan Brown's Postmedia December 30 column, "Proportional representation aids extremist parties." That article serves as a warning of the sort if disinformation we are likely to see.

Last month I wrote a letter to express my concerns about the federal government's refugee intake plan and their goal of resettling 25,000 refugees before the end of 2015. While I am pleased that the government will be extending the deadline for Syrian refugees, I must express that I am disappointed that the government had not listened to experts and facts from the beginning and that the government has now announced that it plans to bring in up to and potentially exceeding 50,000 refugees by the end of 2016.

I am writing this letter in praise of a local food producer, the Miner family of Kemble. They are easily found at the Owen Sound Farmers' Market on Saturdays with their gorgeous bottles of maple syrup, inside, surrounded by the the seductive aroma of freshly baked breads. A few years ago as a newcomer I purchased their granulated maple sugar, Hot Maple Curry and used it on everything, vegetables, soups, meats but let me share my favourite:
Slather butter on naan bread (available across the aisle at the Market)
Sprinkle maple curry sugar generously....
