drop-regDear Editor;

Owen Sound voters have been confused by the conflicting claims of opposite sides of the water fluoridation debate, namely the Health Unit and the Fluoridation Free Owen Sound group. The Grey Bruce Health Unit spokesperson, Mr. Drew Ferguson, has criticized the concerns of the opposing group in letters to various media. There is an Alice in Wonderland flavour to his word usage. I will make quotes from his reference : Joint Government of Canada Response to the Petition to Discontinue Water Fluoridation, Mar. 2008

Fluoride-brick-regDear Editor;

On October 7th, 2014, Fluoridation Free Owen Sound received notification that it is illegal to distribute our anti-fluoride materials and buttons because we failed to register our opposition to the campaign before September 12th, 2014. Therefore, if we hand out our anti-fluoride materials (paid for by our personal funds), we would be in contravention of the Municipal Elections Act, where the penalty under section 94 (1) is a fine up to $25,000 or six months in prison.

I strongly agree with Dr. Ward's well-researched facts against tap-water fluoridation published by the Hub Oct. 15.

Dr. Hazel Lynn recently stated that we do not want to see scientific evidence in favour of fluoridation (Sun Times, Sept.27). On the other side, there are some ten Nobel prize winners, scientists representing 97 per cent of the European population, Sierra Club, many doctors and other health professionals who oppose fluoridation of tap water. Their opinion is based on well-researched scientific evidence.

Perhaps you've seen the "Ten Reasons" card being handed out by the anti-fluoride advocates in Owen Sound. There is nothing of substance to bear out their claims. I guess, if you say it loud enough and often enough, someone might believe you. Let's take a closer look at those so-called reasons...

#1 Toxic? Fluoride used in municipal water systems is not a toxic waste. Health Canada states, "Fluoridation additives certified for use in drinking water are not classified as hazardous waste in Canada." (http://www.fptdwg.ca/assets/PDF/0804-JointGovernmentofCanadaresponse.pdf)

flouride-regEditor;

In promoting fluoridation, public health uses words in a way that confuses the community. Let's examine some of their statements.

Misleading statement No.1: "particularly beneficial to seniors"

Not true. After age eight no more fluoride is incorporated into permanent teeth because they have stopped developing. The rest of our lives we are swallowing fluoride which accumulates in our bodies and can cause chronic toxicities such as brittle bones and bone fractures. Fluoride's main action is topical,acting on teeth surfaces in the mouth. Ingested (swallowed) fluoride is minimally effective in stopping tooth decay.
