Remember back in the not-too-distant past when we would sigh and say “wouldn't it be nice if we had a bakery?”
Now we are blessed with a panoply of bakeries in Owen Sound, each with their own specialties. Recently we were introduced to a new delight – Katy Stroud's Crust and Crackle. Physically, Katy is in Sauble Beach, but with the miracle of the internet and the good will of fellow baker Birgit Wright, Owen Sounders can order their bread on-line and pick it up fresh at Birgit's Bakery Cafe on Thursdays when you get your soup and coffee and pastries.
Yeast loaves are available in white, cinnamon raisin and country harvest. Sourdough breads come in white, caraway rye, seedy, and ancient grains and oats. And all of it lives up to the crust and cracle name.
Katy creates a seasonal “weekly adventure” in sourdough too – recently it was a wild leek and parmesan loaf, this week it will be chive and sour cream. Baguettes and focaccia (this week it is the rosemary classic) fill out the menu.
If you are lucky enough to be in Sauble, you can pick up your order at Crust and Crackle. There are also pick up spots in Port Elgin, Tara, Southhampton, and Wiarton and -if you get there before she's sold out - Katy's at the Lion's Head Farmers' Market this year.
