This Mother's Day weekend, join Midwives Grey Bruce in celebrating mothers and working to make motherhood safe for all women. On May 7th join us at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Pavillion for a family friendly walk beside the Owen Sound harbour.
Registration will be from 8:30 to 9 am, with the walk starting at 9 am. Guest speakers will include Dr. Hazel Lynn, who will speak about her international work experience. All proceeds will be going to Save the Mothers, an organization based out of Uganda who work to reduce maternal mortality.
Save the Mothers (STM) was created when Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, a Canadian obstetrician/gynecologist from McMaster University, was confronted with mothers in need in Uganda. As a volunteer in that country, she discovered many of the causes of maternal death went far beyond medical barriers.
Dr. Chamberlain Froese harnessed the energy and commitment of Ugandan colleagues and founded Save the Mothers to provide a Master's Degree in Public Health Leadership, completed with an intensive community outreach project.
STM is recognized as a groundbreaking program because of how it links leaders from various disciplines to form a network for lasting societal change. It is built on the truth that maternal mortality is not just a medical issue, but a societal problem. STM's founders realized early that the need is to train not just health workers, but politicians, journalists, lawyers, educators, clergy, community activists and other leaders, joining forces to create change in their own culture.
Registration is 25 dollars for adults, children under 13 are free, and a family registration is 50 dollars. For fundraising forms, on-line registration, and more information, please go to the www.walkformothersday.com.
