Bluewater District School Board is joining other school communities across Ontario to honour the first ever Treaties Recognition Week, which takes place from November 6 – 12, 2016. As announced by the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, this special occasion to promote public education and awareness about treaties and treaty relationships was designated by the Province to occur annually during the first week of November.
To coincide with Treaties Recognition Week, the Ministry of Education has developed a number of resources to assist educators across all grade levels in incorporating treaties related learning into the curriculum. In Bluewater, this includes the use of 'We Are All Treaty People' teacher kits in various schools to support student learning. Please visit here for more information.
"Bluewater continues to strongly support and cultivate awareness and understanding among our students of the cultural and historical contributions of our First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples. Treaties Recognition Week provides us with an additional opportunity to bring this important learning to the forefront," says Superintendent of Education Lori Wilder.
A number of schools in Bluewater are exploring ways to promote and recognize the first ever Treaties Recognition Week. For example, G.C. Huston Public School in Southampton introduced the occasion at a Bimaadzwin (Good Path) student assembly. The school is implementing a 'recognition statement' to be read daily during the week and onward. A guest speaker will also be discussing treaties and their significance with classes from Grades 2 to 8.
