Rock Steady Boxing, a unique exercise program, based on training used by boxing pros, and adapted to people with Parkinson's disease, will now be available at the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce. Rock Steady Boxing is the first boxing program in Canada, with the mission to empower people with Parkinson's disease to "fight back". Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant.
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. Parkinson Canada estimates there are more than 100,000 Canadians who have Parkinson's disease and that number continues to grow each year.
"We are fortunate to be able to bring this program to Owen Sound and can't wait to offer it at the Y" said Diana Van Der Meer, who successfully completed the Rock Steady Boxing Training Camp, and is certified to offer Rock Steady Boxing training classes to individuals with Parkinson's disease who live in the area.
Rock Steady Boxing classes start July 9 and are divided into four levels based upon each person's unique Parkinson's symptoms and overall level of fitness. All potential boxers must complete a 90-minute application and assessment process. This will assist the coaches in determining the class placement that would be of greatest benefit to the boxer.
The Rock Steady Boxing Method was developed in Indianapolis over the course of seven years. In 2012, the Training Camp was launched to share the Rock Steady Boxing Method with other people who are fighting back against Parkinson's. Today, there are 603 Rock Steady Boxing programs around the world.
Information Sessions are being offered at the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce, 700 10th Street East, Owen Sound so individuals can learn more about this new program: Wednesday June 13, 2018 at 10-11am & Tuesday June 19th, 2018 at 5:30-6:30pm
