Hanna Meili is ready to start a business doing what she loves. Serve It Up! Tennis will be offering tennis lessons for children ages 4 through 11 at Cobble Beach this summer.
Hanna, a student at Owen Sound District Secondary, has been playing tennis for more than 10 years. "I literally learned to walk on a tennis court," she laughs. She has played in tournaments and coached at camps. "Tennis is a very social sport and a great way to keep physically fit and active. It's also great for your mental health, and has taught me so much - how to challenge myself, and to pace myself for example."
And compared to skiing and hockey, tennis is an inexpensive sport, Hanna says. "All you need is a racquet and a ball."
Starting July 3rd, classes will be offered on weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings on the US Open-certified hard courts of Cobble Beach. The semi-private lessons for 4-7 year olds and 8-11 year olds will be customized for each player, and racquets can be supplied if needed. Kids will learn to improve their skills and agility, and most importantly to have fun!
If the summer goes well, Hanna may offer classes in the fall. "I have 16 year olds who want coaching too" she says.
Serve It Up! Tennis is being developed through the Summer Company Program offered by the Ontario government through the local Business Enterprise Centre (BEC). Young people age 14 to 29 are provided with training and mentoring in marketing, budgeting, planning, and "everything an entrepreneur needs to know," says Hanna. She is grateful for the support of Courtney Miller of the local BEC, and for the chance to work with her mother on this project.
