Come to “Queering Sex Ed” on Monday November 5th from 5-7 pm, at The Milk Maid, 947 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound. This interactive workshop is co- hosted by Make It Wright of Grey Bruce and ARCH HIV/AIDS Resource and Community Health of Guelph.

This workshop, the third of four offered, is an open space created for trans and queer people, their families, and community members to ask questions about trans issues and learn more about how to support trans people. There will be opportunity to learn about sexuality, gender identity, bodies, desires, safer sex and healthy relationships: topics that are not often taught in the mainstream classrooms. With the recent changes to the sexual education curriculum the LGBTQ community is concerned that there is minimal support for transgender youth, and not enough conversation on LGBTQ wellness.

According to Spencer Wright, cofounder of Make It Wright, “Bringing knowledge and services to rural areas like Grey Bruce gives equal opportunity to learn up-to-date information from qualified and experienced professionals in LGBTQ issues”.

People in the LGBTQ community experience higher rates of anxiety and depression, and according to Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), 77% of transgender Ontarians have considered suicide. LGBTQ youth are 14 times as likely to struggle with suicidality than their peers. Make It Wright strives to create more acceptance and inclusion in our community in order to combat isolation and alienation of LGBTQ youth in Grey Bruce. Join the workshop on Monday to learn more about how you can help.
