peeinacup-featureGonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Canada with rates on the rise. Locally, Grey Bruce has seen a more than 300% increase, from six cases in 2013 to 25 in 2014 and a similar pattern developing for 2015. With early diagnosis, it can be treated successfully.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit is working to provide information on STI's, their prevention, testing and treatment. This includes a campaign promoting the availability of urine-based testing for gonorrhea and Chlamydia; the Pee in a Cup campaign.
Public Health reminds the public to use safe sexual practices. Those who are participating in high risk behaviours, such as anonymous sexual contact, those who have multiple partners and unprotected sex should visit their doctor routinely, at least every six months, for testing of sexually transmitted infections.

The foyer of the Georgian College's Marine Training Facility buzzed excitedly this morning with a $3.9 million funding announcement, shared equally by the provincial and federal governments. The funds to support the construction of a Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Training and Research Centre come almost a year after Grey County pledged $2 million to the project. Georgian College and its industry supporters will cover the remaining costs of the $7 million expansion already under construction on the campus. The new facility will include a firefighting simulator and new classroom and office space, allowing Georgian's Owen Sound campus to offer a complete MED training in a single location. Previously, Georgian students split their training between the Owen Sound campus and a federally run facility in Port Colborne that was closed in 2013.

ChesleyHospital-featThis past week, the Chesley Restorative Care Unit got the go ahead to keep its doors open for another six months. This stems from a meeting earlier this month among Ministry staff and MPP Lisa Thompson (Huron-Bruce), MPP Bill Walker (Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound), CEO and President of South Bruce Grey Health Services (SBGHS) Paul Rosebush, where the three fought to continue to deliver this vital program to the community.

"SBGHC is delighted to receive the support of so many people to give the RCU additional time to develop a sustainability plan. The Minister deserves recognition for his support as do MPPs Lisa Thompson and Bill Walker who early on became champions for the program and who kept this issue at the forefront of the healthcare agenda. SBGHC is committed to working with our regional health stakeholders to develop a regional plan that will meet the interests and healthcare needs of so many people in Grey and Bruce Counties," said Rosebush.

"First of all I would like to thank the people who chose to make ..."
