December 2013 gave us an indication that 2014 was going to be an exceptional year for the Utility Assistance Program. We saw a doubling of propane prices, rising from a low of 55 cents per litre to a high of $1.29 per litre. Propane shortages were reported across the province.
The extended and very intense winter saw weeks of snow days and closed highways. There were mid-winter disconnects as well as closed highways keeping the trucks off the road. The anticipated summer slowdown did not occur as families were still catching up on the winter's bills, and struggling to get ahead before the weather turned cold again.
QUEEN'S PARK -- MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Bill Walker says the governing Liberals are "nuts" to introduce a Carbon Tax in Ontario at a time when their party is steeped in a series of spending scandals. He says the tax is also punitive on people as higher taxes translate into lower wages and incomes and will potentially lead to lay-off and job losses.
A carbon tax will raise the price of almost all goods and services, from gas and home heating to farming and food production, explains Walker.
"It's not right. Our people are already paying high taxes, and struggling to keep their heads above water with the rising cost of living, namely sky-high energy rates. This Carbon Tax will be an added burden on them."
OWEN SOUND – Yesterday afternoon, officers from the Owen Sound Police Service attended a residence located on 2nd Avenue West in the City of Owen Sound where the lifeless body of a person was located.
The Owen Sound Police Service Criminal Investigation Branch commenced an investigation which is continuing under the direction of Acting Detective Inspector David Robinson of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).
The identity of the deceased will not be released pending a post mortem examination which is taking place today at the University Hospital located in London, Ontario.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available as this ongoing investigation continues.
SOUTHGATE – On Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at approximately 12:50 p.m., Grey County OPP received a report of an attempted break-in to a residence on Southgate Sideroad 49, in the Township of Southgate.
The attempted break-in was thwarted by the resident who confronted the culprit after he had observed the man's fingers break through a screen door.
Two male suspects, both wearing plaid hoodies, fled the scene in a blue car northbound on Southgate Sideroad 49.

GEORGIAN BLUFFS - On Thursday, January 22 at approximately 8:17 a.m., Grey County OPP received a report of a collision between a pick-up truck and a school bus on Hwy. 6 and Minto Road in the Township of Georgian Bluffs.
The school bus was stopped facing south on Hwy. 6 with its lights and stop arm activated when a southbound 1998 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck collided with the back end of the bus. There were 26 students on board at the time of the collision. A 17-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been released.
The pick-up truck was heavily damaged and the driver sustained a minor injury.
A 54-year-old man, of the Township of Georgian Bluffs, was charged with Careless Driving. The Inter-Township Fire Department and Grey County Emergency Services (EMS) assisted.
