David-regWith the election of new municipal councils across the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound riding and a federal election in the air, and winter now upon us, it's time to revisit an issue that is just not going to go away — the nature of work in Ontario and Grey Bruce.

We'll be talking about precarious work — low wage, often part time or temporary work — the kind that won't get you to the end of the month. The kind that makes you rely on food banks and utility funds at the United Way.

drink-opp-regORILLIA – During the OPP Festive RIDE campaign from November 24, 2014 to January 2, 2015, OPP officers laid 593 impaired charges and issued 485 Warn Range suspensions. Sadly, one person died in an impaired-related collision on December 20, 2014.

When comparing the numbers to last year, the OPP is disappointed to see little change between this season's campaign and the last one. During the 2013-2014 Festive RIDE campaign, the OPP laid 587 impaired charges and issued 504 Warn Range suspensions. Three people lost their lives in impaired-related road crashes over the 2013-2014 campaign.

handicapped-regWith the addition of a power door to his office, local MPP Bill Walker has made his constituency office in Owen Sound a fully accessible space for people with mobility issues. The office building at 920 1st Avenue West already included a ramp and an elevator. The automated door brings the member's office into compliance with the provincial building code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.

ice-regORILLIA – With two snowmobiles having fallen through the ice since the start of the new year, the OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) are reminding snowmobilers that no ice can be considered 100 per cent safe to ride on when snowmobiling on frozen waterways.

Fortunately the two drivers and two passengers managed to get out of the water and make it to safety. This is a rare and fortunate outcome given that snowmobilers in these types of incidents often do not make it out alive.

opp-cuffs-regLUCKNOW – On January 2, 2015, a South Bruce OPP officer on patrol along Campbell Street in Lucknow recognized a man who was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant. The man fought with police and managed to drive off in a White Oldsmobile. The vehicle was located and stopped in Perth County where the man was arrested without incident.

A 32-year-old resident of Huron-Kinloss Township has been charged with dangerous driving, drive while disqualified, assault peace officer, personation and two counts of breach probation.
