Markdale Hospital ER ViewThe Ministry of Health has approved the pre-tender documents submitted earlier this Spring by Grey Bruce Health Services to build a new hospital in Markdale. This approval permits GBHS to move to the final stages of the project – issuing a call for tenders for construction of the hospital; awarding the contract, and starting construction.

“This is great news for patients in Centre Grey, and for local businesses who will benefit from this multi-million dollar infrastructure project,” said Gary Sims, President and CEO of GBHS. “Our goal is to release the tender package by mid-September. Construction companies will have six weeks to prepare their bids, and once the Ministry approves the bid, GBHS can award the contract.”SOUTH PRESEPECTIVE RENDERING

The new hospital will be located next to the Grey Gables long-term care home in Markdale. The building will be 68,000 square feet and will include four acute care beds, a palliative care room, 24/7 emergency room with four exam and treatment areas, a laboratory, medical imaging services, ambulatory care clinics, and two ambulance bays.

“I am very pleased that the Ministry of Health has approved Grey Bruce Health Services to move forward with the tender process for a new hospital in Markdale,” said the Hon. Bill Walker, MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. “This is truly outstanding news, not only for the community of Markdale, but for our entire region. I applaud all parties that have been involved in getting us to this point and look forward to seeing shovels in the ground!"

“This new hospital will make a huge difference to countless patients and their families for decades to come,” said Betty Bassett, Board Chair of Centre Grey Health Services Foundation. “We are beyond excited and cannot wait to work with the entire community to turn this project into reality.”

The construction company will determine the start date for building the new hospital, and GBHS is optimistic that shovels will be in the ground by early 2021. The new hospital will take approximately two years to complete.
