Caframo has announced that the demolition of one of its buildings will occur soon. The “big Caframo” building, visible from the waters of Colpoys Bay will be coming down.

“As part of our regular facilities maintenance, we engaged an engineering firm to assess the health of the building. They explained that the condition of the building was deteriorating and that we should plan to stop using it,” said Tony Solecki, Caframo’s President. “Options to refurbish the building were considered, but it was not feasible.”

The building was constructed in 1902 by the Crown Portland Cement Company and then abandoned in 1914 when that company ceased operations. When Caframo started operations in 1955, it was repaired and put back in use. Caframo has been designing and producing fans, heaters and similar products on this property ever since. More history of the property can be found here.

Dale Schnurr, Caframo’s Director of Product Development and an avid fisherman said “I know hundreds of boaters over the years have seen the building and used it as a reference point for local fishing holes. We’ll be sorry to see it go. I don’t know if I’ll be able to find my favourite spot next summer.”

Caframo’s webcam www.caframo.com/webcam has been redirected toward the building, and the public is invited to watch along as the project proceeds. Demolition is beginning today, Wednesday, November 17.
