Over the past 24 hours inclement weather has led to slick roads, reduced visibility and less than optimal driving conditions. During late afternoon on Monday, February 29th at the intersection of 10th Street at 3rd Avenue West a 3-car collision occurred when a vehicle travelling eastbound on 10th Street attempted a left turn onto northbound 3rd Avenue West. The turning vehicle was unable to clear the intersection in time and was struck, also coming into contact with a 3rd vehicle. There were no obvious injuries; however, some of the involved drivers and passengers later attended hospital to ensure their well-being.

Vehicles turning left in front of approaching traffic must be able to clear the intersection without causing a

hazard. Spinning and sliding tires will increase the time required to do so in safety. The Highway Traffic Act calls for turning motor vehicles to yield the right-of-way to approaching traffic, and only attempt the turn if it can be done so in safety.

An approaching vehicle's ability to stop is also reduced by slippery or icy roads, and may require increased stopping distance and time. This is especially relevant to drivers who refuse to reduce their speed to suit poor

weather and road conditions. Please remind motorists to reduce their speed and increase their stopping distance during unfavourable conditions.
