It is that time of year again! Grey Bruce has had approximately 50 cases of laboratory confirmed influenza since the start of the year, most over the past 2 weeks. As well, reports of other respiratory illnesses are circulating in the region.
Public Health would like to remind everyone there are several things that can be done to protect yourself and others from respiratory illnesses:
· Get the flu shot – it is still available at many pharmacies throughout the region.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer. The influenza virus can survive on unwashed hands for 5 minutes, on tissues or clothing for 8-10 hours and on hard surfaces such astelephones and computer keyboards for 2 days.
· Cover your cough – reduce spread of germs by covering your mouth with your sleeve, not your hand.
· If not feeling well, stay home and rest. Try to stay away from work, daycare, school or social gatherings until you are feeling better.
· If you are sick, don't visit loved ones in hospitals or long-term care facilities. With weakened immune systems, the elderly and those in hospital are more at risk of developing serious complications of influenza which can be life threatening.
Get a flu shot; it takes two weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective. Influenza vaccine is still available at doctor's offices and selected pharmacies across Grey Bruce. For further information call Public Health at 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456 or visit our website
