Nikaanaganaa Counselling & Training Centre opened earlier today. Community members were on hand for the official opening of Nikaanaganaa Counselling & Learning Centre on June 30th at 1:30 pm. The new service is located at 897 3rd Ave. E in Owen Sound. An array of dignitaries from the city of Owen Sound and the First Nation communities, including elder Wilmer Nadjiwon, was in attendance to help mark the occasion.
Trish Meekins is the proprietor of the new service and is especially pleased her grandfather, Wilmer, was on hand to share in the official opening. Trish credits her grandfather with instilling pride and passion in her for creating new paths for First Nations communities.
As a registered social worker, hypnotist, child and youth counsellor and therapeutic touch practitioner, Trish is realizing a life long goal of offering these services for the First Nations communities and Grey and Bruce Counties.
Trish is committed to creating a relaxed and open atmosphere for participants in both her counselling practice as well as her workshops. She brings with her over 20 years of counselling and teaching experience to assist individuals and families. Additionally, Trish offers cross-cultural training, First Nations history and organizational development. She is a member of Neyaashiinigmiing, Chippewas of Nawash Unceded band.
At the open house and opening, those in attendance enjoyed Chef Zach Keeshig's Indigenous snacks.
