With three Canadians losing their lives each day in the workplace or because of previous exposure to an agent in the workplace and with nearly 300,000 reported injuries each year in Ontario, the Grey Bruce Labour is honored to assist our communities to take time to remember these workers. Such loss is ever present in the families, friends and loved ones affected by death, disease and injury from the workplace, but all those that attend and participate in Day of Mourning Ceremonies hope that such ceremonies let people know they are not alone or forgotten.
Each April ceremonies are held in three locations across Grey and Bruce Counties; Hanover, Bruce Power and Owen Sound and the Grey Bruce Labour Council is honored to be master of ceremonies at each location.
According to Labour Council Vice-President, Dave Trumble, "the Day of Mourning is a time to remember and to rededicate ourselves to ensuring the safety of all workers. The ceremonies in our region bring together workers, elected officials, businesses and employers, workers' representatives and the community in general in the spirit of collaboration that is so profoundly important in keeping our workplaces safe".
In speaking about the Day of Mourning, Labour Council President, Kevin Smith reminds people that "The Day of Mourning finds its roots in the Labour Movement, but its sustainability in this spirit of collaboration. Further to this the health and safety culture of the workplace can only improve with a desire by all parties to make workplaces healthy and safe for everyone".
