Ontario Provincial Police LogoOn June 1, 2017 at 2:48 p.m., the Bruce Peninsula OPP received a report of capsized canoe which was carrying two males, near the Grotto in Georgian Bay, in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. 22-year-old Bennett Zeller, from Queensland, Australia was reported missing.

A second passenger in the canoe, a 26-year-old male, from Windsor, Ontario, swam to shore. He was transported by the Bruce County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to a local hospital with hypothermia and was released.

From June 1 to June 5, 2017, members of the Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Bruce Peninsula OPP Marine Unit, Bruce Peninsula National Park Wardens, West Region OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Aviation Service Helicopter, OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Department, Tobermory Coast Guard, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Trenton and ORGNE Air Ambulance assisted with the search for the missing male.

On June 5, 2017 at 5:00 p.m., the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), the Bruce Peninsula OPP Marine Unit and the Bruce Peninsula National Park Wardens; located Bennett Zeller, deceased.

The police investigation is complete, foul play is not suspected.
