POGO survivorBruce Power will provide $300,000 over the next five years to the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) as a key element in its multi-year Community Investment and Sponsorship Program.

POGO has been championing childhood cancer care since 1983, ensuring that all children with cancer in Ontario, their families, and survivors have equitable access to the best care for the best possible outcomes.

When a child is in cancer treatment, POGO provides families with financial support to help ease the burden of unexpected out-of-pocket costs. They commit to each child’s ongoing care, knowing that childhood cancer survivors may endure medical and cognitive challenges into adulthood. And POGO research contributes to a better understanding of childhood cancer and its impacts.

“We are grateful for Bruce Power’s generous donation to POGO, which is a reflection of its pledge to meet the challenge to fight cancer,” said Jill Ross, POGO CEO. “Bruce Power’s multi-year commitment provides stable funding that will allow us to plan long-term for initiatives that support Ontario families with children in cancer treatment and childhood cancer survivors. POGO’s work with community partners like Bruce Power, who are co-champions of kids’ cancer care, plays an important role in ensuring a coordinated, high-quality, safe and family-centred system of care, with the best possible outcomes for those who experience cancer in childhood.”

Bruce Power, which produces Cobalt-60 used to treat cancer and sterilizes medical equipment, says this new partnership with POGO fits well into the company’s focus on health and wellness locally, provincially and globally as well as the company’s commitment to do what it can in the fight against cancer.

“Bruce Power plays a lead role in supplying the world’s health care sector with Cobalt-60, which saves countless lives every day,” said James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs & Operational Services. “By teaming up with POGO, we can be a partner in helping to deliver the right care at the right time, whether for a young patient at diagnosis or a survivor outside of a hospital setting, providing as many as possible with opportunities to live their best lives.”

Bruce Power also recently announced $1.45 million in donations over the next five years to hospital foundations across Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, as the company maintains its focus on improving the health care of people locally and around the world.

Today, Feb. 15, is International Childhood Cancer Day. Learn more about POGO at www.pogo.ca.
