karate-fullThe Military Family Resource Centre at CFB Meaford and Fudoshin Classical Karate in Owen Sound, are pleased to announce their-co-creation of the Three Battles Program, intended to serve active and retired Canadian Forces personnel and their families.

The Three Battles Program is centred around the teaching of a traditional Okinawan Karate kata, or form, called Sanchin. Sanchin translated literally means "three battles" and refers to the body, mind and spirit - three paths each of us must move through to become who we were meant to be, and are capable of becoming.

Mike Merritt, co-creator of the program, holds a Masters of Social Work degree and is an associate instructor at Fudoshin Classical Karate in Owen Sound.

Mike is currently employed at the Military Family Resource Centre and is a former reservist himself. In developing the Three Battles program Mike incorporated elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, the philosophy of Dr. Viktor Frankl and the traditional Okinawan martial art of Karate, as a means of imparting time-tested techniques for calming the mind.

The program's mandate is to help practitioners be better able to focus on daily life in a responsible and mindful way.

The Military Family Resource Centre Meaford is a non-profit, registered charity that provides assistance to Canadian Armed Forces families. Through outreach to the communities that our families live (Meaford, Collingwood, Owen Sound and areas in between) to in-house programs, we strive to be a reliable resource dedicated to supporting the quality of life of military families.

Fudoshin Classical Karate is a not-for-profit organization, based in Owen Sound, dedicated to the preservation and teaching of classical Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Jutsu and Kobu-Jutsu. Though Karate is a highly effective system of self-defence, its ultimate purpose is "to seek perfection of character." The dojo offers classes for men, women and children in a non-competitive, safe environment.

For more information about the Three Battles Program, please contact Mike Merritt at (519) 538-1371 ext. 6844. For more information about Fudoshin Classical Karate please contact Chief Instructor Michael Den Tandt at [email protected], or call (519) 376-5953.
