The Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation's Christmas Angel Campaign is underway. This year, it aims to help put people "back on their feet". The goal is to raise $300,000 for new operating room equipment used by orthopaedic surgeons.
GBHS Chief of Staff, Dr. Brendan Mulroy says "I've had the pleasure of seeing countless patients put back on their feet. Knee or hip replacement surgery can transform a life – it's not unusual to see a patient who struggled to climb a flight of stairs return to hiking or golf afterwards."
The funds needed will purchase six high precision, cordless power tool sets used during many types of orthopaedic surgery. In addition, 2 new HD video towers used during minimally invasive, arthroscopic procedures to look inside joints to diagnose and treat a variety of problems must be replaced. HD video technology will help surgeons see the surgical field in greater detail.
Last year, there were 1,898 orthopaedic surgeries performed at the Hospital. Around 36% of these were hip or knee replacements. 22% were emergency re-constructions after accidents, etc. There were 155 different kinds of orthopaedic procedures performed.
"Many people don't realize that while the government funds the operation of hospitals, little funding is provided for medical equipment," said Foundation Chairman, Neil McCutcheon. "It's only through the generous support of donors that we have a well-equipped hospital."
To make a donation, watch for the Foundation's letter in your mail or call and donate using your credit card. Call 519-372-3925 weekdays between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. Donations can also be made securely through oshfoundation.ca.
