Emmelynn and her parents walked two kilometres last Saturday in the cold so that others can have a place where it's warm.

They walked in the Coldest Night of the Year, a now-annual fundraiser for Safe n' Sound Homelessness Initiative in Owen Sound. This year about 70 people walked a 2, 5 or 10 km. route to raise almost $15,000.

Safe 'n Sound is a not for profit, charitable community based organization, created in 2007 by a group of local citizens concerned about the lack of emergency shelter in Grey and Bruce.

crystalgrovelaineyThey operate "The Space" (310 8th Street East, Owen Sound) - a community within a community where the at-risk of homelessness and the homeless can access basic needs as well support, advocacy and referral.

Safe 'n Sound also runs an after-hours emergency phone service which provides emergency shelter in motels with transportation and breakfast, seven days a week.

Crystal Grove Lainey answered that phone every Saturday night from 2009 until she retired in 2019, and was honoured for her generosity at the Coldest Night.

Donations to the fundraiser can be made here until March 3, or any time by contacting Safe n' Sound.
