What I find shameful is the lack of back bone. [Walker says nothwithstanding clause is necessary]
I am tired of citing the Nazis ... but come on, and learn from history. The early Nazis heavily used similar laws to turn off democracy. Slowly, step by step. And all the career-hungry, wonna-fit-into-the-box backbenchers from the Zentrum Partei (the German PCs at that time that supported the far right) made it possible, before they were abolished themselves.
My main concern is that the personal vendetta that Doug is having with the TO council is just for testing how much resistance there is to turning off the Canadian charter rights and democratic process (e.g. the judiciary that balances the power of the executive authority). Unfortunately, most PC MPPs seem to prefer keeping a very low profile, and don't mind if the executive overrules the judicary.
Democracy requires a backbone. Party cowards destroy democracy to promote their own career. In Germany after 1945, everyone looked for "the culprit" who made this mess possible, and many have been haunted by guilt until their death bed.
