In December 2017, a group of shipwreck divers disclosed that in July 2017 they had located the wreckage of a missing vessel named the Jane Miller, in an inlet of Georgian Bay. The Jane Miller is a cargo ship that sank on November 25, 1881. At the time that it was reported found, it was believed that human remains were visible inside, prompting a police investigation.
Members of the Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Unit, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) and OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS), under the direction of Detective Inspector Scott Moore of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) conducted an investigation into the presence of human remains aboard the Jane Miller, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
During this investigation the USRU partnered with Canadian Forces, Department of National Defence Experimental Diving and Undersea Group, in a joint operation to explore the wreckage.
Investigators completed a thorough search and have been unable to confirm the presence of human remains aboard the shipwreck. The investigation has been concluded.
