The foundation of Crime Stoppers since its inception is to protect the anonymity of the Tipster. To encourage the public to report information on criminal activity both proactively and reactively, Crime Stoppers programs offer the availability of cash rewards up to $2,000. Not all Tipsters are motivated by the availability of a reward, and many report crime believing it is their civic responsibility.
As a pilot project in the City of Toronto, Toronto Crime Stoppers recently announced that they would be suspending payment of cash rewards beginning in 2020. Funds previously used for rewards will instead go to areas in the city impacted by crime. This project is exclusively in Toronto and in response to the rising frequency of violent crime in 2019.
Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce will continue to offer cash rewards for successful tips which are approved by the volunteer Board of Directors here in Grey Bruce.
