Lawn bowling 1 resizeThe Roselawn Bowling Club of Owen Sound received grant support as part of ParticipACTION’s 2019 Community Better Challenge. ParticipACTION began in 1971 to encourage Canadians to get fit and stay active. It was also the organization behind the famous Body Break commercials of the 1990s. The new Community Better Challenge will run from May 31 to June 16 to bring Canadians together with physical activity and will use technology to track their work.

Communities can register at ParticipACTION.com. Registration is open to schools, employers, sports organizations, and other community groups. The more organizations in the community that register, the more opportunity the community has to gather points. And there are prizes. The community crowned Canada’s Most Active Community wins $150 000 towards physical activity initiatives, regional winners will win $20 000. Individuals can win prizes too by downloading the ParticipACTION App or visiting participaction.com for more information.

Roselawn will help participants in Owen Sound earn points by hosting two open houses at their greens on June 1 and June 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

roselawn logoClub President, Linda Stinson, says the club will provide instruction and bowls and that visitors just need to wear flat-soled shoes. All ages are welcome.

Lawn bowling is easy to learn and fun to play according to Bob Menzies, who first attended an open house last year before joining as a member.

"I am so eager to start a new and full season of this great activity that does involve some cool skill that one can build up, but doesn't involve too much strain on both the body and the pocketbook,” Menzies said.

For more information on Roselawn, go to their Facebook page or visit roselawnbowlingclub.com. The green is located at 1555 Fifth Ave. W. Owen Sound.
