Maple Leafs former Captain and fan favourite Doug “Killer” Gilmour will head up the list of celebrities at the 28th Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament to be held at the Saugeen Golf Club on June 5th.
Doug Gilmour played for over 20 years with the National Hockey League. Mostly as a defence man but also a right winger. Locally he was mostly remembered for his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs where the former Captain gained the nickname "Killer". Much admired by Don Cherry during and after his professional career Gilmour retired from professional hockey to his home town of Kingston in 2003 where he continued on coaching the Frontenacs. In 2019, he left the team to become a community representative for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Saugeen Golf Club will once again be the host club for the tournament and the gala dinner in the evening.
Veteran local broadcaster Fred Wallace returns as Master of Ceremonies and golfers will have a chance to meet and greet a lineup of all-star guest celebrities headed up by Doug Gilmour.
Over the past 27 years the Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament has attracted several stars from the world of sports including Marcel Dionne, Gerry Cheevers, Bobby Hull, Paul MacDermid, Pete Mahovlich, Gregg Zaun, Wendel Clark, along with Sportscaster Brian Williams.
The tournament always fills to capacity with a full complement of more than 144 golfers from throughout the region.
Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce is a locally operated registered charitable program governed by a civilian volunteer board of directors. Crime Stoppers offers an invaluable service to law enforcement agencies throughout the twin counties by providing anonymous information from the public on crimes ranging from Highway Traffic Act offences to narcotics production operations and everything in between.
Crime Stoppers continues to be “community policing” in its purest form by allowing the public to be “part of the solution” to crime in their communities. Statistics illustrate the success of the program with over $53 Million in total seized narcotics and stolen property, and with over 15,500 tips since the program’s inception in 1987.
Thanks to the involvement of individuals and members of the business community, this tournament has provided a large part of the operating revenue for the local Crime Stoppers program, raising over $525,000. That being said Crime Stoppers would welcome further support for our tournament through corporate sponsorship.
