On Monday, June 1st, the Georgian Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra performed their annual year-end performance to a house of appreciative souls who were treated to the efforts of this earnest young ensemble. Under the guidance of Music Director and Conductor Richard Mascal, the youth orchestra acquitted themselves nobly, showing both their potential and their achievements thus far.
Guest vocalist Sylvie Annette Kindree accompanied the GBSYO during one memorable segment, and sang three Gershwin songs. While I never saw any tears actually being shed there were eyes being wiped at the poignance of their combined rendition of "Someone To Watch Over Me." I know this to be true as my eyes were among those needing attention.
The Georgian Bay Folk Society logo is popularly known as 'the man under the tree' and was inspired by the image of David Essig tuning up at the first Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival. David will return for this year's 40th anniversary Summerfolk and we're throwing a photography contest in June to celebrate.
To participate submit a photograph that contains at least one (1) musician, a tree, and some water with your name and "contest" in the subject line to [email protected]. Contestants are encouraged to be creative. The Georgian Bay Folk Society will post the pictures on Facebook beginning on June 16th and the three photos with the most 'likes' as of 5pm on June 30th will win.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 4th, 5th, and 6th, at 7:30PM at The Roxy, The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie. In this murder mystery, the guests of Monkswell Manor are in for more than they bargained for when they are storm stayed and become suspects in a murder that any one of them could have committed. The intrepid Detective Sergeant Trotter is tasked with finding the culprit amongst them. Set in 1950s England, The Mousetrap is the ultimate whodunit, filled with mystery, suspense and intrigue.

On Saturday May 30th over 300 people gathered at St. George's Church in Owen Sound to celebrate the career of retiring Hillcrest Elementary music teacher Brad Crawford. The audience filled the pews while current and former students, including Crawford's two sons, surprised him with a tribute concert, shared their favourite stories, and thanked him for the lessons he had taught them. Teaching does not provide much instant gratification but Saturday's show was proof that good teachers make great differences.
Friday, May 29th, from 4PM to 6PM, The weekly Friday Afternoon Coffee House & Open Mic at The Bleeding Carrot, 945 Main Street, will again be hosted by Kelly Babcock. Bring your poems, your songs and your instruments or just an appetite to hear great local talent and sip coffee, tea, or fruit smoothies and join in the fun of this free event.
Friday, May29th, from 6PM to 8PM at The Frog Ponds, 209 8th Street East, Paul Danard presents Jazz Trio. There will be a short open mic from 6 'til 6:30 and then Paul, on bass, will be play jazz with Jake Scott on sax and Brian O ` Rourke on guitar. This is a "pay what you can" event.
