Tuesday is back to school for most students across Ontario. The Owen Sound Police Service is reminding motorists that the streets and sidewalks will once again be busy with students travelling to and from school. Students may not always be focusing on traffic safety and motorists are encouraged to slow down and be extra cautious.
Drivers are also reminded that school buses and crossing guards will be back on our roadways. Remain alert and be prepared to make unanticipated stops. Failing to stop for a crossing guard displaying a portable stop sign carries a fine of $180.00 and three

The City of Owen Sound is seeking:
Owen Sound Police arrest and charge two males with stealing. During the early morning hours police were advised of two males shoplifting from a downtown convenience store. The males had fled prior to police arrival after stealing a small amount of food items. Shortly before 6:00 am police were notified by a citizen that he observed two males stealing from vehicles in his neighbourhood located in the area of 4th Avenue West and 13th Street West. The citizen provided police with their descriptions and location which assisted in their arrest. Upon arrest, police identified the two males as also being the ones involved in the convenience store theft. Two Owen Sound area men, a 19 year old male and 20 year old male have each been charged with two counts of theft, possession of property by crime and prowl by night and must attend court in September. Police are requesting that anyone who has had property stolen from the said area contact investigating officer PC Edmiston at 519-376-1234 x179.

Just because I took some time off this summer, I don't want to leave you thinking that your city council has not been hard at work. Here are my notes from a special meeting August 26, the only one you cannot watch on YouTube.
City Manager Wayne Ritchie was presenting three reports. He began by saying that the city was in the "service and communication business", and all his recommendations were in support of doing that business better and more cost effectively.
The Council supported his recommendation for bringing by-law enforcement responsibilities back into city hall from Police Services. The move is intended to give staff and council a better picture of which by-laws are working as they were intended or not, as well as a cost saving. At the moment, this would only involve one staff person. While the mayor expressed concern that this might make by-law enforcement "a political football" (one of the reasons it was moved out of city hall when it was), other councillors felt that staying out of those disputes was part of the responsibility of a councillor.
