The Georgian Bay Garden Club founded in 1990, began as an initiative by six women, all keen horticulturalists and floral designers.
By May of 1993, the Club membership increased dramatically. A Scholarship Committee was formed, and criteria were established for a $500 bursary to be awarded to a student from the Owen Sound area pursuing post-secondary studies in horticulture, landscape architecture and/or environmental studies.
Bursaries have been awarded annually since 1993. Currently the value of the annual bursary is $1,000.
The Georgian Bay Garden Club raises the money for the bursary with a number of fundraisers through out the year. These include garden tours, garage sales, plant sales, and the sale of Christmas urns.
Bursaries are now open to students graduating from all secondary schools in the Bluewater District School Board and the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board. The application can be found on the club's website and are accepted until July for the following academic year.
The 2022/2023 recipient is Connor Maxwell, who is currently a third year student in Environmental Engineering at the University of Guelph. Connor’s studies focus on how environmental factors behave and the solutions to solve problems that occur. In addition to his studies, Connor volunteers with Trout Canada to focus on the rehabilitation of the environment in the Grey Bruce community.
