WIARTON – Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, said Monday that the federal government will invest in restoration and upgrade work at Wiarton Harbour.
The project involves partially demolishing the upper portion of a timber crib structure and covering it in armour stone, to create a rubble mound breakwater, Miller's office said in a news release.
Recent "breaches" have raised concerns about the breakwater and its ability to protect the infrastructure behind it, the MP's office said.
OWEN SOUND – A group of local six to eight-year old boys are hoping to "bake a difference" with a two-day lemonade and cookie sale to raise funds for the United Way's Fire Support Fund. All proceeds from the event are to assist the Johnson family of Georgian Bluffs, who lost everything in a fatal house fire July 9th.
Saturday July 19th, the group will have cold lemonade and freshly baked cookies for sale at the Owen Sound Farmer's Market from 8am to 12pm.
For some who knew me as a Toronto Star reporter or more recently as a journalism professor at Carleton, this move may come as a bit of a surprise. But politics has been a passion for a long, long time.
I remember as a ten-year-old in 1973 drawing a picture on a paper plate of Richard Nixon, with his now infamous quote "I am not a crook" written in magic marker around the rim. As a 10th grade student at Walkerton District Secondary School, I made my first trip to Ottawa, to take part in the Forum for Young Canadians program that allowed students to spend a week in the capital, visiting Parliament Hill and meeting with politicians. I can still remember the excitement of prowling the halls of the Centre Block, looking for the names of famous politicians on the office doors.
