The Owen Sound Attack is announcing General Manager Dale DeGray has completed a trade to acquire overage forward Brett McKenzie from the North Bay Battalion. In exchange, the Attack have dealt the Battalion 3rd year forward Matthew Struthers, a 2nd round pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, and a 14th round pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to bring Brett into our locker room. We know that he'll bring leadership, scoring ability, experience, and even more depth to our forward corps," DeGray said of the acquisition.
A native of Vars, Ontario, McKenzie has suited up in 295 career Ontario Hockey League games after being drafted by the Battalion 10th overall in 2013.
In those nearly 300 contests, McKenzie has scored 88 times while adding 110 assists for a stellar 198 career points. In 2016-17 he produced at a point per game pace, recording 67 points in 67 games.
Through 31 games on the season, McKenzie has scored nine times while also contributing 14 assists for 23 points after beginning the year on a professional tryout with the AHL's Utica Comets. Utica is the affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, who drafted McKenzie 194th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft
Going to North Bay along with the draft picks is former Attack 3rd round pick Matthew Struthers.
In 145 career OHL games, Struthers has found the back of the net 24 times while adding 26 assist for a total of 50 points.
"It's never easy to trade a player like Matt," DeGray said of the Milton native.
"He's a tremendous talent, a hard worker, and extremely well liked in the room. He'll have a chance to thrive in North Bay and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
